i got straight a’s in spm 2015 but there’s 5 a- . i want to further my study in medical course. so what is the best step should i take?

Which scholarship is suitable to study medicine?

Hi @emirkhalid080798, first thing first, congrats for scoring straight A’s SPM result!

There are a few ways to study Medical course, since I do not know your preference, family financial background or constraints etc, I just list down the common paths to pursue a degree in medical related courses.

Local Public University (University Awam)

To get into local public university for degree courses, you will first need to take either Matrikulasi or STPM.

After you have completed the pre-university programme, you can apply using your Matrikulasi or STPM result for admission into medical courses offered at UM, UKM, UIAM etc.

There are quite a number of universities that offer medical courses. Make sure you take biology and chemistry subjects during your Matrikulasi or STPM.

Local Private University

There are a number of private universities in Malaysia that offer medical related courses like International Medical University (IMU), AIMST University etc. Mind you, the fees are really exorbitant.

Again, since those medical courses are degree courses, you need to take Matrikulasi or STPM or A Level first and then apply for admission using Matrikulasi or STPM or A Level result.

Alternatively, you can take foundation courses offered at these universities. For example foundation of science.

Overseas University

You need to take Matrikulasi, STPM, A Level or other pre-u programme first and then apply for admission using the result. Alternatively, you can take foundation courses offered at these universities.

Also, most overseas university will require you to take IELTS or TOEFL as your English assessment. So remember to take that anytime during your pre-university year.

Just in case you don’t know, some overseas universities do set up branches in Malaysia and offer medical related degree courses. For example, Newcastle University Medicine (NUMed) Malaysia. So you can study at these universities in Malaysia and get the overseas degree / certification.

I really want to be a doctor. I got 8As and 1B which is english. So for medic, it is better to studying abroad or local university? I got offer from al azhar, mesir. The total cost to study there is about RM150 000 for six years. Is it worth it?

Studying abroad or local is definitely personal choice and preference. A lot of medic graduates from local public universities like University of Malaya (UM) are well known specialists and some even highly sought after by Singapore and other foreign hospitals.

When you mentioned you got the offer, did you mean the scholarship offer?

A lot of consideration points come into play before someone decides whether local or overseas university medic programme is a better option for him/her. Each person is unique thus the personal preferences, constraints like family financial background etc are some of the important points to consider. Definitely you don’t want to end up struggling to pay your tuition fees or in huge debt just for pursuing an undergraduate programme.

i got straight As in spm15…i would like to apply for scholarship but due to my research, it seems like most of the scholarships are not available for medicine…what are the scholarships available for medicine course? :slight_smile:

Hello. I got 8A’s and 2B+ for my chemistry and addmaths for my spm 2015. Is it possible for me to continue my studies in medical course or should i just forget about it? Since most of the medical students achieved straight A’s for their spm :sweat:

It really depends on which university that you plan to apply. Public university or private university?

If private university (for example foundation in science) then it is less competitive in terms of admission and hence you do not really need to worry about your SPM result since yours is quite good. After you complete the foundation programme you can get admitted into the private university without much difficulty.

If public university, you should be happy to know that they are quite a number of universities offering medical courses. So other than Universiti Malaya (UM), you should really consider others like UIAM, UiTM etc. Make sure you score top result for your pre-university, meaning CGPA 4.0 for matriculation / STPM then you will stand good chance to get admitted into your choice of medical course at local public university.

I’m considering to go to public university and continue with asasi sains. So even though i didn’t get straight A’s for my spm, i still have chance to continue my studies in medical? It just that i have to score CPGA 4.00. Right?

Now the Malaysian Medical Council has been rather strict. To be able to do housemanship in Malaysia, aspiring doctors must graduate from a specific list of universities. To pursue medic, you must do extensive research and comply to their rules.

Hi, good day to you. I’m arts student from spm and my maths result was bad too E, just passed. I just continued my diploma in pharmacy in University Mahsa but currently since i wish to continue degree most universities prefer me to do either bioMedscience degree first or else to retake spm with the required subjects of sc stream to proceed mbbs later. I’m already 21 and i wish to do it faster, please guide me the better choice.
