Howard Gardner is well known for his theory that all humans have MANY different ways of learning. He says that if we make use of all the different ways we have, we can learn better.
The seven intelligences are:
-
Verbal/Linguistic - This is the part of us which loves to read and use language.
-
Mathematical/Logical - This is the part of us which thrives when things are presented in mathematical or logical ways.
-
Visual/Spatial - This part of us loves visual design and color. It learns best by seeing things.
-
Musical/Rhythmic - This part of us keeps rhythm. Arranging information to be learned into poetry and into rhythm helps it be remembered.
-
Bodily/Kinesthetic - This part of us loves to touch things and loves to participate, rather than watch. Movement is very important to learning in this sphere.
-
Social/Interpersonal - This part of us loves to work in groups and have interaction. It learns best through conversation with others.
-
Reflective/Intrapersonal - This part of us loves privacy and quiet. It loves to think deeply about things and write in a jounal.
Each one of us has a learning styles profile according to how often we use the different intelligences we have. Most of us use most of them every day, but some people will prefer one way of taking in information and the other will prefer something else. How we learn is almost as individual as a finger print.
The more intelligences we can involve in our learning, the more solid our learning will be.
