For a mortuary science degree, students take courses in biology, chemistry, business, writing, mathematics and either psychology or social science. The field of mortuary science requires competency in many core areas, including science, communications, and business. Students, therefore, receive a diverse education in the liberal arts, business management and hard sciences for the degree, which culminates with taking and passing a National Board Examination in the USA.
As juniors and seniors, mortuary science students take courses in funeral services. Courses include the history of funeral services, laws, and regulations, pathology, embalming and community relations. In their final year, students might study artistic techniques for preparation, learn management skills for owning and operating a funeral parlor, and participate in internships or hands-on training opportunities.
