IGCSE has been compared with SPM in Malaysia as the syllabuses are almost the same, with the exception of some subtopics. It has been widely regarded that upon completion of IGCSE, the student would not have to complete SPM as IGCSE mostly ends during the age of 16. This has spurred quite a sum of SPM aged students in some universities and colleges. The main target for the IGCSE leavers are A Level programs, as it has been commonly believed that having both O levels and A levels is guaranteed admission in top UK universities. Other programs of interest are foundation, diploma and American Degree Transfer programs. Usually, this is taken at private universities as public universities generally require SPM results.
