What would the ideal university be like?

In my dreams.

  • Each student would have a mentor.
  • In lieu of classes, the student would meet with the mentor twice a day: once to learn the material, and once to go over homework.
  • Every morning the mentor would give the student an assignment that he’d finish by the end of the day. (Except on weekends, where students and mentors would be completely free.)
  • Each class would last four weeks, but the student would be able to focus on one class at a time. Students would have different mentors for each class.
  • To graduate, the student would have to pass an exam covering all the core subjects in their major. There’d also be exams every year which would form the basis of their GPA. The students wouldn’t be graded on homework, but if they ignored their mentor’s assignments they’d be screwed when it came to the exams.
  • The instructors would have no duties other than teaching and the student-to-faculty ratio would be 3:1.
