It has been a subject of debate to which is better, IGCSE or SPM, as it provides a hallmark for secondary education. First, let us take a look on their grading system. SPM grades are generally given after all the SPM papers are marked. For example, if the paper is really hard, an A could be obtained to as low as 70. But as for IGCSE, the grades are consistent, albeit to the accumulative grades obtained. Furthermore, IGCSE is also widely recognized by many universities worldwide. If you could obtain an A* on a subject, it would greatly increase your credibility as an individual. Getting an A* or A in English as a Second Language also provides an alternative route for other English tests such as IELTS and TOEFL. However, upon further inspection of the syllabuses, it should be noted that the SPM syllabus is more comprehensive and detailed compared to IGCSE’s, which is evident in Biology. The reason for this is SPM examiners often seek detailed descriptions and word-by-word exact answers, but IGCSE examiners often deduct the answer in an abstract form, allowing the students to offer any answers that are relevant to the questions. Public universities is also yet to recognize IGCSE. My advice? If you could, take both. It is an impressive skill, to have taken both tests.
